Our Sustainable Development Approach

At Lunetterie Vue d'ensemble, we believe that quality eye care should meet our customer's needs while also considering its environmental impact and our role within the community.
For us, sustainability and social responsibility are not destinations, but a process of continuous improvement. This means regularly reviewing the way we operate, strengthening the practices already in place, and identifying new opportunities to make a positive impact.
We have structured our approach around seven key areas that guide our decisions:
-
Local and responsible sourcing
-
Durability, repair, and reuse of eyewear
-
Waste reduction and responsible material management
-
Reducing transportation through local operations
-
Responsible store design and operations
-
Supporting the local community
-
Contributing to neighbourhood development
On this page, we present the practices currently implemented at Lunetterie Vue d'ensemble, along with the initiatives we plan to undertake in the future. As our sustainability journey evolves, this page will be updated to reflect our progress.
1. Local and Responsible Sourcing
We offer a selection of frames designed or manufactured in Quebec and across Canada. Whenever possible, we prioritize local suppliers, independent designers, and Canadian brands.
At the same time, we recognize that affordability remains an important consideration for many customers. Ensuring access to eyewear that meets both individual needs and budgets remains one of our priorities. For this reason, our collection also includes frames from outside Canada across a range of price points.
When making purchasing decisions, we aim to:
-
Prioritize local suppliers whenever their products meet our customer's needs.
-
Showcase independent designers and local brands.
-
Better document the environmental and social practices of our suppliers.
-
Offer selected collections made with recycled materials or featuring other documented environmental benefits.
-
Continuously improve our responsible purchasing criteria.
Among the brands we carry is ECO Eyewear. According to information published by the manufacturer, several of its collections incorporate recycled materials and are associated with greenhouse gas reduction or carbon offset initiatives.

2. Durability, Repair, and Reuse of Eyewear
We believe that extending the lifespan of eyewear is one of the most effective ways to reduce premature replacement and the consumption of new resources.
Whenever the condition of a frame allows, we prioritize maintenance and repair over replacement. Our team also advises customers on proper handling, cleaning, storage, and everyday care to help preserve their glasses for as long as possible.
Our current practices include:
-
Frame adjustments and maintenance.
-
Repairing certain frame components whenever technically feasible.
-
Providing advice on extending the life of eyewear.
-
Reusing quality frames whenever their condition permits.
-
Offering a curated selection of vintage frames.
Over the coming year, we also intend to expand and better structure our selection of pre-owned frames.
3. Waste Reduction and Responsible Material Management
When eyewear can no longer be used or repaired, we aim to prevent it from being discarded with regular household waste.
Lunetterie Vue d'ensemble offers customers a collection service for unwanted frames and lenses. Collected items are sorted and, depending on their condition and the options available through our partners, directed toward reuse, donation, or recycling.
This initiative allows us to:
-
Collect used frames and lenses returned to our store.
-
Identify frames that may be suitable for reuse or donation.
-
Direct eligible materials to specialized recycling programs.
-
Raise customer awareness of available end-of-life options.
-
Reduce the amount of optical products sent to landfill.
Recycling opportunities vary depending on the materials used in frames and lenses. We therefore work with the recovery solutions currently available while seeking to improve the traceability of collected items over time.
4. Reducing Transportation Through Local Operations
Since opening our store, we have edged lenses and assembled eyewear directly in our in-house laboratory.
Performing these steps on-site reduces transportation associated with outsourcing these services while giving us greater control over the quality of every pair of glasses we produce.
This approach enables us to:
-
Edge lenses in our own laboratory.
-
Assemble eyewear on-site.
-
Reduce transportation associated with external lens edging.
-
Perform direct quality control.
-
Complete adjustments and corrections more efficiently.
High-quality workmanship can also help extend the lifespan of eyewear by reducing errors, remakes, and premature replacements.
5. Responsible Store Design and Operations
We strive to reflect our values through the design of our workspace and the furniture and equipment we choose.
Part of our store's furniture has been sourced through reuse, helping extend the life of existing furnishings while reducing the need to purchase new ones.
Our boutique also features a living plant wall, primarily intended to create a welcoming and enjoyable environment for both customers and staff.
Over the coming year, we also plan to assess replacing some of our older, less energy-efficient air conditioning equipment with more efficient systems.
6. Supporting the Local Community
Our commitment extends beyond environmental responsibility. We also strive to support organizations and initiatives that contribute to the vitality of our community.
We regularly participate in fundraising campaigns by donating gift certificates and sponsorships to local organizations and community initiatives.
Some of the organizations and events we have supported include:
-
Sponsorship of the NDG Art Hop.
-
Supporting fundraising efforts for SharkX Sports Programs.
-
Supporting fundraising initiatives for Usawa Productions.
-
Supporting the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraising march.
-
And many other local community organizations and initiatives.
These contributions allow us to:
-
Support fundraising activities.
-
Assist local non-profit organizations.
-
Contribute to community initiatives.
-
Help strengthen the social vitality of our neighbourhood.
We intend to continue this commitment while taking into account the needs expressed by community organizations and our ability to support them.
Whenever possible, we provide supporting documentation and examples of these partnerships to demonstrate the impact of our community involvement.
7. Contributing to Neighbourhood Development
Lunetterie Vue d'ensemble is also actively involved in the economic and community life of the neighbourhood.
One of the business owners serves on the board of directors of the Monkland Avenue Merchants Association. This involvement provides an opportunity to contribute to discussions regarding the area's commercial development, the needs of local businesses, and the continued growth and visibility of Monkland Village.
Through this participation, we aim to help strengthen the neighbourhood and collaborate with organizations, local merchants, and other stakeholders committed to its development.
Our Next Steps
Our sustainability journey continues. Over the coming year, we plan to:
-
Formalize our responsible purchasing policy.
-
Develop supplier selection and evaluation criteria.
-
Better document the environmental and social characteristics of the products we offer.
-
Begin the process of obtaining recognition under the ICI on recycle+ program.
-
Evaluate replacing older, less energy-efficient air conditioning equipment.
-
Expand and better organize our selection of pre-owned frames.
-
Continue developing our eyewear maintenance and repair services.
These commitments represent our ongoing objectives for continuous improvement. We will update this page regularly to share completed initiatives, lessons learned, and the next steps in our sustainability journey.
